We collect as little as we can. There are no ads, no tracking cookies and no third-party analytics.
What we collect
- Your account: your username, a securely hashed version of your password (we never see the password itself), when you joined, and when you agreed that you're a human with only one account.
- What you post: ideas and links. These are public.
- Your votes and reports. Other members only see an idea's totals, not who voted. Votes can be part of the research data described below.
- Abuse prevention: to limit sign-ups, failed log-ins and spam, we keep a one-way, keyed hash of your IP address for up to two days. The hosting provider's servers may also keep standard access logs.
We don't ask for your email, real name, phone number or location.
Signing in with Google
If you choose “Continue with Google”, Google tells us a unique ID for your Google account, so we can recognize you next time. For a work or school account, it also tells us the domain of the organization that runs it, such as berkeley.edu. We don't receive your name, email address, contacts or anything else from your Google account, and we don't keep any Google tokens. Each Google account can be linked to one Voddit account.
Berkeley Voddit, at berkeley.voddit.com, uses the same accounts. Anyone can read it, but only people with a berkeley.edu Google account can vote and post there, and that domain is how we check. Ideas posted there only appear on Berkeley Voddit. Brand Voddit, at brand.voddit.com, uses the same accounts too, and its ideas only appear there.
Research
Voddit is meant to show what people want from their governments. By creating an account, you release the data you contribute, such as your ideas and votes, to be used for research into how to improve governance, with your username and personal information removed. We may share this data with researchers, or publish it, for that purpose.
Cookies
We use two cookies, both needed for the site to work: one keeps you logged in, and one protects forms against cross-site request forgery.
Sharing
We don't sell or rent your information. We share it only for research into how to improve governance (see Research), when the law requires it, to protect people from harm, or to report illegal content to the authorities.
Your choices
You can delete any of your ideas at any time. You can delete your account in Account settings, which permanently deletes your ideas, photos, votes and reports. Copies may stay in backups for a limited time, and in research data shared before you deleted them.
Children
Voddit isn't for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
